Productive Performance of Crossbred Dairy Cattle

  • Descrição: This study was conducted to evaluate the productive performances of crossbred dairy cattle at Holetta agricultural research center’s dairy farm. A total of 6685 performance records were used and analyzed to determine the effect of period of calving, season of calving, parity and genetic group. Parameters used as indicator of productive performances were lactation milk yield (LMY), daily milk yield (DMY) and lactation length (LL). The GLM procedure of SAS 2004 was used for analysis. The overall least square means and standard errors for Lactation milk yield (LMY), daily milk yield (DMY) and lactation length (LL) were 2204.05 ± 21.12 kg, 6.88 ± 0.05 kg and 326.69 ± 2.03 days, respectively. Result of fixed effect analysis indicated that calving period, genetic group and parity were significantly (p<0.001) influenced all productive traits. LMY, DMY, and LL were sensitive to seasonal variation. Comparisons among the crosses revealed a clear-cut difference among the genetic groups. Milk production in the first generation crosses increased more compared to second generations. There were marked decline in performance among 50% F1 (Borena dam x Holstein Friesian sire), F2 (F1 dam x F1 sire) and F3 (F2 dam x F2 sire) from 2203kg of milk to 1697 and 1522 kg, respectively. The 75% first generation was superior LMY compared with other genetic groups and produced about 34.2 %, 74.3%, 94.3% and 45.9% more milk than 50% F1, F2, F3 and 75% second generations, respectively. The higher milk yield of 75% first generation and 50% F1 crosses from other genetic groups could be associated with higher heterosis effect in F1, higher milk gene in 75% and longer lactation length. Based on the productive performances evaluation, the results of LMY, DMY, and LL for high grade (75% first generation) in the present study revealed that performances were continued to increase with increasing proportion of exotic gene.

Expression of estrus in dairy cows: phenotyping, genetic...

  • Descrição: Dairy cow estrus is marked by acute changes in behavior, such as increased activity and decreased rumination. These changes can be measured on the farm using wearable sensors and other monitoring systems. The main goals of this study were to quantify the expression of estrus in lactating dairy cows, evaluate its genetic variability, and assess its genetic correlation with milk production and fertility responses. Data consisted of 46,048,112 bi-hourly activity and rumination records collected using automated monitoring devices in 10,335 lactating dairy cows during 2 years on a large commercial farm. We developed an algorithm that quantifies changes in activity and rumination to infer the duration and intensity of estrus. First, we evaluated the association between estrous traits and pregnancy success using alternative logistic regression models, adjusting by lactation, year-season, and sex-sorted or conventional semen. The statistical analysis showed that the addition of a detected estrus (binary variable, yes/no) contributes significantly to explaining pregnancy success, relative to insemination in the absence of a detected estrus. Similar results were found for estrous duration and intensity. Second, we assessed the heritability of estrous traits using a sliding 21-day window between 21-100 DIM. We also evaluated the heritability of number of estrus between 11-70 DIM (voluntary waiting period). The statistical models included herd-season and lactation as fixed effects and cow as a random effect. Heritability estimates for presence/absence of estrus were around 0.20±0.02 in the period 21-50 DIM and 0.09±0.03 in the period 50-100 DIM. Similar results were observed for the duration and intensity of estrus. The number of estrus during the voluntary waiting period (11-70 DIM) showed a heritability estimate of 0.23±0.02. Finally, we evaluated the relationship between estrous traits and productive performance, including average milk production in the period 11-70 DIM and also 305-day mature equivalent milk production. Estrous traits were all negatively correlated with productive traits, ranging from -0.14±0.06 to -0.37±0.05. Overall, the duration and intensity of estrus can be measured in a digital, standardized, and scalable framework, and these traits are significantly associated with pregnancy success. Notably, estrous behavior traits are heritable, which implies that breeding for improved expression of estrus has the potential to improve on-farm detection and increase insemination and pregnancy rates. Additionally, estrous traits are genetically unfavorably correlated with milk production.

DATASET FOR PERFORMANCE OF SUPERIOR DAIRY CATTLE SIRES

  • Descrição: This study's object includes animal identity data, pedigree data, and milk production performance records for Holstein Friesian dairy cows born between 2017-2021. This study's parameters included milk yield, length of lactation, peak production, and dry length period. Another factor to consider is the environmental state. High air temperatures have a negative impact on dairy cow welfare and production across Europe, especially tropical regions. This causes severe cattle losses. Humidity, air velocity, and insolation all have a major impact on animal thermoregulation. Special indices are employed to measure the overall impact of various environmental conditions on animals. The temperature-humidity index (THI) is commonly used to assess how ambient temperature and relative humidity affect animals. Genetic advancement on selection indicators in dairy farming by 90-95% depends on the amount of breeding value of bull breeders. Realizing how breeding value (BV) is passed down across generations is crucial for selecting the right pairs and advancing the breed. Accurate and detailed forecasts help farmers decrease economic risks when selecting genetic material. Estimation of breeding value uses the BLUP method since this method is the most accurate estimated breeding value of sire compared to other methods The production performance of FH dairy cattle is included in the good category. For 1st lactation, which has an average milk production of 8,029.28 ± 1,112 kg; length of lactation 321.26 ± 38.48 days; peak production on day 85.36 ± 29.25 with milk production of 32.55 ± 4.16 kg; and the dry length period was 51.37 ± 9.33 days. Lactation 2 milk production 7,761.66 ± 1,145 kg; length of lactation 323.66 ± 43.06 days; peak production on day 58.43 ± 21.11 with milk production 40.79 ± 5.30 kg; and dry length period was 65.10 ± 22.69 days. Lactation 3 milk production 7,788.92 ± 1,148 kg; length of lactation 326.64 ± 46.74 days; peak production on day 61.88 ± 22.72 with milk production 43.62 ± 5.11 kg; and the dry length period was 65.00 ± 20.49 days. Lactation 4 milk production was 7,484.18 ± 1,133 kg, lactation length was 323.04 ± 42.23 days, peak production was on day 66.39 ± 24.26, milk production was 43.82 ± 5.68, and the dry length period was 65.78 ± 21.60 days. The heritability value of FH cow milk production namely 0.03 ± 0.02, is included in the low category. Differences in heritability values is due to differences in the type of data and statistical analysis used. Low heritability estimates indicated that the differences in the performance traits of Holstein cows were due to different nutritional, climatic conditions, and management practices prevalent over different times. A system-based analysis of the genetic determinism of udder conformation and...

  • Descrição: Using GWAS to identify candidate genes associated with cattle morphology traits at a functional level is challenging. The main difficulty of identifying candidate genes and gene interactions associated with such complex traits is the long-range linkage disequilibrium (LD) phenomenon reported widely in dairy cattle. Systems biology approaches, such as combining the Association Weight Matrix (AWM) with a Partial Correlation in an Information Theory (PCIT) algorithm, can assist in overcoming this LD. Used in a multi-breed and multi-phenotype context, the AWM-PCIT could aid in identifying udder traits candidate genes and gene networks with regulatory and functional significance. This study aims to use the AWM-PCIT algorithm as a post-GWAS analysis tool with the goal of identifying candidate genes underlying udder morphology. We used data from 78,440 dairy cows from three breeds and with own phenotypes for five udder morphology traits, five production traits, somatic cell score and clinical mastitis. Cows were genotyped with medium (50k) or low-density (7 to 10k) chips and imputed to 50k. We performed a within breed and trait GWAS. The GWAS showed 9,830 significant SNP across the genome (p ESR1, FGF2, FGFR2, GLI2, IQGAP3, PGR, PRLR, RREB1, BTRC, and TGFBR2.

Prioritization of interventions to reduce antimicrobial use in...

  • Descrição: This dataset accompanies the multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) presented in the article : It was developed to prioritize interventions aimed at reducing the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms from Québec’s dairy sector, using the PROMETHEE-GAIA method implemented in D-Sight software. The dataset contains the performance (impact) matrix of interventions across evaluation criteria, as well as stakeholder weighting files for three decision scenarios reflecting different perspectives: CURRENT scenario: Based on the current context and stakeholders’ real-world priorities. ANIMAL THREAT scenario: a hypothetical situation where there is a 50% increase in resistance to first-line AMs used to treat mastitis and/or respiratory diseases in dairy cattle PUBLIC THREAT scenario: hypothetical situation where human mortality attributable to AMR increased by approximately 2.5 times Each file is in .xlsx format and compatible with D-Sight (v3.3.2 and v6.6). All data have been anonymized and aggregated to protect participant confidentiality. 📁 Files Included Impact_Matrix.xlsx Contains the performance (impact) scores of all interventions across evaluation criteria (human health, animal health, environmental, economic, social, and operational dimensions). Scores were derived from literature synthesis and expert assessments. Weights_CurrentScenario.xlsx : Criteria weights elicited from stakeholders under the Current context, reflecting present-day priorities. Weights_AnimalThreatScenario.xlsx : Criteria weights under a Farm Threat scenario. Weights_PublicThreatScenario.xlsx Criteria weights under a Public Health Threat scenario. ⚙️ Methodology Summary The MCDA framework integrates human, animal, environmental, social, economic, and operational dimensions to operationalize a One Health approach to AMR decision-making. Criteria and interventions were co-developed through a participatory process involving producers, veterinarians, industry representatives, and public authorities. Analyses were performed using the PROMETHEE II ranking algorithm and GAIA decision maps in D-Sight. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to evaluate robustness to changes in weights and scoring uncertainty. 📚 Suggested Citation Millar, N. (2025).

Wound healing and pain sensitivity following caustic paste...

  • Descrição: Caustic paste disbudding is increasing in popularity on commercial dairy farms in the U.S., but little research has explored the pain and welfare implications beyond the acute period of this procedure. Researchers have reported it takes 7 to 9 wk, on average, for hot-iron disbudding wounds to re-epithelialize in dairy calves. Our objective was to describe wound healing and sensitivity following caustic paste disbudding. Jersey and Holstein female calves were disbudded using Dr. Naylor’s caustic paste at 3 d of age (n = 18) while control calves received a sham procedure (n = 15). Before disbudding, calves received a local block and an NSAID. Calves ≥ 34 kg and < 34 kg at birth had 0.3 or 0.25 ml of paste applied per unshaved horn bud, respectively. Following disbudding, wounds were scored 2x/wk for the presence/absence of 8 tissue categories including the final stages: new epithelium and fully healed. Control calves were removed from the experiment after 6 wk to be hot-iron disbudded ..., Please see the description in the associated research publication. , Please see the included README file.

Dairy cows' motivation to nurse their calves dataset

  • Descrição: For seven weeks, dairy cows were housed with their calf on either full-time (full; 23 h/d, 28 pairs) or part-time (part, 10 h/d, 27 pairs). Additionally, 26 cow-calf pairs were used as a control treatment, and had no contact. Over two weeks, week 8 and 9, half of the contact pairs (full and part) experienced reduced contact (RC), to first approx. 50% of original contact (9.5 h for full, 4.5 h for part) and then approx. 25% of original contact (4.5 h for full, 2 h for part). The other half continued with unchanged contact (UC). The cows' motivation to nurse their calf during week 8 and 9 was tested in a maximum price paid (MPP) test, where cows had to pass through an increasingly heavier gate for the opportunity to nurse their calf. The weight on the gate increased by 1.0 bar at a time to a maximum test resistance at 8.0 bar. Cows were interpreted as having reached their MPP when they failed to pass the gate two days in a row. As an alternative, the cows could pass a gate to obtain partial contact (PC), or they could remain in the start box of the arena, obtaining no contact (NC). The gate leading to PC remained at a low resistance throughout the testing. We hypothesised that cows with reduced contact would express reduced motivation to nurse their calves, and thus have lower MPP than cows with unchanged contact. We also expected that motivation would affect the trainability of the cows, meaning that RC cows would be more likely to fail training than UC cows. Cows' latency to pass the gate was recorded, and it was recorded whether the calf suckled during the test or not. Additionally, we hypothesised that cows would utilise the option of partial contact, when the weight on the gate leading to nursing surpassed their maximum price. This was recorded for cows with two consecutive fails. Furthermore, it was recorded whether cows had attempted to reach their own calf before they failed. Contrary to our hypothesis, cows with RC had higher MPPs than cows with UC (significantly for full, numerically for part). Full UC cows had similar MPP as no-contact cows. RC calves were more likely to suckle. Fewer no-contact cows than any of the other treatments passed training. We found no indications of preference between PC and NC for the cows' first fail, but cows were more likely to chose NC in the second fail. No relationship was found between cows attempting to reach the nursing opportunity and what alternative they eventually chose. MPP was analysed using Cox' proportional hazards mixed effects models, trainability and the relationship between trying own calf and chosen alternative were analysed using pairwise Fisher's exact tests, likelihood of nursing was analysed using Chi^2, and choice of alternative was analysed using binomial tests. Latency was only descriptively analysed.

Replication Data for: Crowd sourcing remote comparative lameness assessments...

  • Descrição: Lameness assessments are rarely conducted routinely on dairy farms and when completed typically underestimate lameness prevalence, hampering early diagnosis and treatment. A well-known feature of many perceptual tasks is that relative assessments are more accurate than absolute assessments, suggesting that creating methods that allow for the relative scoring of ‘which cow is more lame’ will allow for reliable lameness assessments. Here we developed and tested a remote comparative lameness assessment method: we recruited non-experienced crowd workers via an online platform and asked them to watch two videos side-by-side, each showing a cow walking, and to identify which cow was more lame and by how much (on a scale of -3 to 3). We created 11 tasks, each with 10 video pairs for comparison, and recruited 50 workers per task. All tasks were also completed by 5 experienced cattle lameness assessors. We evaluated data filtering and clustering methods based on worker responses and determined the agreement among workers, among experienced assessors, and between these groups. A moderate to high interobserver reliability was observed (intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC=0.46 to 0.77) for crowd workers and agreement was high among the experienced assessors (ICC=0.87). Average crowd worker responses showed excellent agreement with the average of experienced assessor responses (ICC= 0.89 to 0.91), regardless of data processing method. To investigate if we could use fewer workers per task while still retaining high agreement with experienced assessors, we randomly sub-sampled 2 to 43 (1 less than the minimum number of workers retained per task after data cleaning) workers from each task. The agreement with experienced assessors increased substantially as we increased the number of workers from 2 to 10, but little increase was observed after 10 or more workers were used (ICC>0.80). The proposed method provides a fast and cost-effective way to assess lameness in commercial herds. In addition, this method allows for large-scale data collection useful for training computer vision algorithms that could be used to automate lameness assessments on farm.

Livestock haulers’ views about dairy cattle transport in Atlantic...

  • Descrição: Increasing interest by stakeholders, including the public, in farm animal welfare has brought about recent changes to the Canadian livestock transport regulations that affected dairy cattle transport. We interviewed 7 livestock haulers in Atlantic Canada regarding their attitudes towards these recent changes. Our analyses of the conversations revealed the following 2 major themes: 1) issues relating to animal welfare and management on the dairy farm and during transport and, 2) the feasibility of transport requirements and the enforcement of the regulations, including animosity towards other haulers and the challenge of satisfying both regulatory bodies and farmer clientele.

Free-ranging cows at Biebrza Marshes

  • Descrição: A herd of thirty semi-free grazing dairy cows was studied with GPS telemetry in 2016. The cows were followed across whole grazing season: from 27th April till last day of October. GPS logger (Holux RCV-3000) with a waterproof coating was attached to a collar on one of the cow’s necks. The logger was taken off, charged and mounted once, on average, at 1.6 days intervals and acquired data at 1-minute intervals. GPS data were collected on 119 out of 187 days of grazing season. The whole herd moved together, therefore it was only necessary to follow one animal. During that time adult cows where not supplementary fed. They were also not milked by the farmer but instead nursed their calfs. The cows were released around 5:50 am from a private farm, where they headed out on their own to foraging sites in the wetland of Biebrza National Park. They were later led back to the farm by a farmer about 4:30 pm. Local

Milk Yield and Quality of Crossbred Dairy Cows Fed with Different...

  • Descrição: This study was conducted to examine the effect of different levels of vetch hay (Vicia dasycarpa) supplementation on feed intake, milk yield and milk composition of 50:50 Boran-Freisian crossbred dairy cows fed a basal diet of Napier grass (Penissetium purpureum). Five crossbred dairy cows at an early stage of lactation with average milk yield of 6 – 8 liters/cow/day and body weight of 390 ±15 kg (mean±STD) were arranged in a 5*5 latin square design. In the first 4 treatments, Napier grass was fed ad libitum as basal diet, while in T5 (the control diet) native hay was the basal diet. In treatment 1, 2 and 3 vetch hay was supplemented at 20% (2.4 kg), 30% (3.6 kg) and 40% (4.8 kg) replacement of the total daily DM intake, respectively. In T4 and T5 concentrate mix (55% wheat bran, 43% noun seed cake (Guotie Abyssinia) and 2% salt) was supplemented at the rate of 0.5 kg per liter of milk produced. Total dry matter intake differed among treatments in the order of T4>T3=T5>T2>T1. Milk yield was greater for concentrate supplemented treatments compared with the vetch supplemented ones, and was similar (P>0.05) among the different level of vetch supplemented groups. Milk fat and protein were not affected (P>0.05) by treatments. In general this study indicated that optimum milk production (8.81 liter/cow/day) can be obtained with the use of Napier grass supplemented with 2.4 kg/cow/day vetch hay dry matter.

  • Descrição: Due to insufficient energy intake, postpartum dairy cows experience a decrease in plasma glucose, which may result in lipid metabolism disorders. Rumen-protected glucose can improve energy balance and alter lipid metabolism in postpartum dairy cows. However, research on the changes in milk fatty acid composition and metabolite in early lactating dairy cows fed different levels of rumen-protected glucose is very limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary rumen-protected glucose supplementation levels on the milk fatty acid composition and metabolome of early lactating dairy cows.Thirty-two Holstein cows were divided into four treatment groups based on body weight, parity and lactation performance in a randomized block design. Dairy cows in each treatment group (n = 8 per diet) were supplemented with 0, 200, 350, and 500 g/d of rumen-protected glucose from calving to day 35 postpartum. Milk samples from these dairy cows were collected on the last day of the experiment for fatty acid composition analysis using gas chromatography and for milk metabolite analysis using untargeted metabolomics.

Energy and protein gap analysis in dairy cows kept under fodder based diet...

  • Descrição: Study hypothesis: There is a gap in dry matter, water, energy and protein intake of dairy cows kept in fodder- based diet under cut and carry feeding system in Sub- Saharan countries, Rwanda included. A study was done in small holder dairy farmers and 111 lactating dairy cows were used for observational data. Parameters analyzed included nutritive value of offered fodder, which was 25% of dry matter, 58% neutral detergent fibre, 9% crude protein and of 5.6 mega joules per kg DM. Mean land size was 0.5ha, area for fodder was 0.1ha, number of cattle was 1.7, mean body weight of cows was 430kg, days in milk was 145; cow age was 7 and parity was 3. Data on feeds characterization were computed with Groot et al., models while data for the production requirement of dairy cows under lactation were computed using LIGAPS dairy models. Statistical analysis was conducted using the SPSS Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 26.0 (George and Malley, 2019). After testing the normality of data, data were grouped. Grouping variables were lowlands and highlands regions, breed types and lactation periods. Test between groups was done by means comparisons and their variances were tested using one way analysis of variance test. Means were significantly different at P<0.05. Tested variables were dry matter intake, dry matter requirement, dry matter gap, body weight, metabolically weight, water intake, water requirement, water gap; milk yield, attainable milk, milk yield gap, protein intake, protein requirement, protein gap; energy intake, energy requirement, energy gap. Results showed that daily intake was 9kg DM; 35 liters of water; 898gr of crude protein and 55 MJ ME with current milk production of 6kg. The daily requirement for both maintenance and 16 kg milk production were 15kg DM: 56 liters of water, 1908 g CP and 137 MJ. The daily gap was 4.52kg DM, 22litres of water, 1109 gr of crude protein and 84 mega joules ME with 10 kg gap in milk yield per day. Results from this analysis will serve as instruments for researchers in developing dairy diet models to improve dairy cow productivity at household level. Demonstrating the gap of available feeds resources would trigger the uptake of new feeding technologies by farmers. Extension agents should focus in knowledge transfer on optimal harvesting time of existing fodder when their nutritive value content is optimal. For dairy feeds manufacturers, this would serve as a guide for proper rationing of high concentrates ingredients rich in energy and protein in consideration of their requirements. Policy makers need to facilitate farmers to have access to facilities for upgrading the available low-quality roughages to enhance their energy and protein content. Adopting best feeding management based on enhanced energy, protein and water intake would contribute to improved milk production resulting to better remuneration to farmers, increased national milk pool and per capita milk consumption.

Dairy database for prediction of main environmental challenges to resilience...

  • Descrição: The dairy database comprises average values for a wide range of variables (110 or 119), available in 4 worksheets: BasicFarmType (18 rows), DetailedFarmType (10 rows), ClimateClass+BasicFarmType (100 rows), NUTS+DetailedFarmType (1452 rows). Data are omitted when the sample size (n) is below 15, as per the confidentiality agreement under FADN data use rules. A combined farm characterisation database was constructed using two major data sources, the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN), and the Gridded Agro-Meteorological Data in Europe (AGRI4CAST). The database initially constructed was further enhanced through the addition of forage and crop yield data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) developed Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZ) methodology database (FAO, 2012). The data was processed and is presented in D1.2 as two databases (dairy and beef), as averages for a wide range of variables at basic or detailed farm types, and at NUTS2 regional scale. Detailed FADN data (anonymised individual farm data) was requested for all ruminant and mixed farm types, over 10 years and the most recent data available at request (2011-2013) was utilised for the analysis. Following receipt of the data (~250k farms) this has been compiled into two consistent datasets, one for dairy (141,961) farms and one for beef farms (54,417). Each dataset comprises some values directly from the FADN data, but also a large number of calculated variables, to identify dairy or beef enterprise performance at per animal, per output product unit or per hectare. These values were calculated according to the respective dairy and beef enterprise allocation methodologies described by FADN. Further economic and structural variables have been calculated as necessary, as described in GenTORE D1.1 (Quiédeville et al., 2019). For each farm within the dataset, the structural, production and economic data from the FADN data is supplemented with the addition of meteorological data. The daily meteorological data was downloaded from the AGRI4STAT database web portal at a NUTS2 scale. For each NUTS2 region data was available for a number of weather stations. This large dataset was processed through scripts in STATA software to generate annual values for a wide range of climatic variables, including Temperature Humidity Index (THI), and indicators of drought and seasonality of weather. Furthermore, the altitude values per weather station allowed for a sub-grouping of weather station data by altitude zone (aligned with values available in the FADN dataset). Using a Latent Class Analysis process, the meteorological data was analysed to identify consistent environmental regions in Europe. Selected climatic variables, together with altitude zone, were utilised to statistically identify differing zones, and to classify each NUTS2 region to a zone, resulting in 6 lowland zones and 3 upland zones (above 600m) The LCA process enhanced an earlier method of manually overlaying the Metzger et al. (20054) pedo-climatic zone allocation, but closely correlates. Therefore for each farm in the dairy and beef datasets, meteorological and environmental zone data was allocated on a NUTS2 by altitude zone basis and this dataset has been subsequently assessed and submitted as papers; Quiédeville et al., (submitted May 2020) and Grovermann et al. (submitted May 2020). The GAEZ forage and crop yield data was downloaded from the GAEZ data portal as baseline and two future climate prediction periods: Baseline (1961-2000), 2020s (2011-2040), and 2050s (2041-2070), for the Hadley CM3 model and IPCC scenario A (the most extreme scenario). See: ). A zonal statistics was applied to the GAEZ layers to aggregate the data to NUT2 region and altitude zone (0-300m, 300-600m, 600m+) with raster package in R. The result is an average yield[1] for varying forages and crops for each altitude zone in each nuts2, for both the baseline and the future climate scenario. This data allows further analysis of the future impacts on cattle farming at both a regional scale, but also by farm type or system, which may be affected differently (Moakes et al. in preparation). All variable processing from FADN data is shown in the Annex, as performed in Stata software. [1] The mean was performed on non-zero yield pixels in order to exclude non-suitable areas from average.

Data: Farm level factors influencing enteric methane emissions from dairy...

  • Descrição: The data describes smallholder dairy systems in Malawi. This includes the characteristics of smallholder dairy systems and enteric methane concentrations from dairy cattle. The study area included five districts of Malawi: Lilongwe, Mchinji, Dowa, Mzimba and Dedza, and was conducted between May and June 2024, in the cool dry season. The research aimed to achieve the following at smallholder dairy level: to quantify milk production and actual enteric methane values from dairy cattle, to investigate the farm-level variables influencing enteric methane and to determine the relationship between enteric methane and dairy productivity. Seventy-two smallholder dairy farmers were selected via random sampling and surveyed. Farmers met the following criteria: members of a milk bulking group, within the 5 selected districts and partnered with Lilongwe University in the FoodMa project (https://luanar.ac.mw/pco2/programmes.php). Sixty-eight farms comprising 100 dairy cattle (heifers and cows) were included for analysis. Farm level data (farm and farmer characteristics) were collected via intra-household interview, guided with an "intra-household questionnaire". The KoboToolbox software was used to design and create the questionnaire, as well as store the farm level data. KoboCollect smartphone app was used to facilitate the interview. Enteric methane concentrations were measured directly from each animal in all the selected farms using the Laser Methane Detector (LMD), which was directed between the nostrils of the animal. Methane was measured per animal in the following procedure: every 6-minutes with 1-minute rest intervals, for 1 hour. Data was categorized into two: Methane concentration data and Farm level data. Methane concentration data (ppm) included "raw methane activity data" and "average methane data". Raw methane data was cleaned and analyzed to determine the enteric methane concentrations from the animal which was recorded in the dataset "average methane data". Farm level data comprised the "raw farm data" and "processed farm data". The raw farm data was data recorded during the interviews which was processed by combining similar variables, to create the "processed farm data" . For analysis, both processed datasets were combined into the "farm and methane data". The combined dataset was analyzed using a linear mixed model (LME) to determine farm-level factors influencing enteric methane emissions from dairy cattle in smallholder dairy systems and the relationship between enteric methane and dairy productivity.

Journal of Dairy Science - 2025

  • Descrição: Genetic selection for feed efficiency in dairy cattle is a promising strategy tomitigate environmental emissionsreduce the environmental footprint of dairy production. In this study, genetic selection for residual feed intake (RFI) using the EcoFeed index developed by STgenetics was evaluated as a tool to improve feed efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A life cycle assessment (LCA) approach was used to quantify emissions from feed production, enteric fermentation, and manure management under three RFI selection scenarios: baseline (average genomic RFI; gRFI), 1 standard deviation (SD) improvement in gRFI heifer and gRFI cow and 3 SD improvement in gRFI heifer and gRFI cow. As expected, selection for improved gRFI led to enhanced feed conversion efficiency. Animals with a 1 SD improvement in gRFI consumed 2.73% less feed over their lifetime, while those with a 3 SD improvement consumed 8.2% less with no impact on productivity. These improvements in feed efficiency translated into a 2.42% reduction in lifetime CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions (35,769 vs 34,902 kg CO2e) in the 1 SD group, and a 7.31% reduction (35,769 vs 33,153 kg CO2e) in the 3 SD group. Enteric CH4 emissions were the largest contributor to the lifetime carbon footprint, accounting for 38.9% of total emissions in the baseline scenario, highlighting the importance of genetic selection for methane mitigation. Feed production and manure management accounted for 17.51% and 32.53% of total emissions, respectively. These findings suggest that genetic selection for RFI using the EcoFeed Index significantly reduces the carbon intensity of milk production through improved lifetime feed efficiency and subsequently reduced feed intake per unit of milk production, establishing it as a key strategy for reducing GHG emissions the dairy sector.
